How to lose belly fat! [Updated] 2019

Getting rid of stubborn belly fat is something that many people strive to achieve, and a quick fix such as a magical belly fat eliminating exercise is exactly what we are all looking for.

Social media and society has led us to believe that we must have visible washboard abs with not an ounce of fat in sight. This of course is unsustainable for most and may not be the best goal to have - I have written about the impacts of social media on our body image in a previous blog post.

However, despite this there are still many people whose main focus in their fitness goals is to lose fat from their belly. Although I do not advocate basing your goals purely on aesthetics, there is some merit to losing belly fat (and fat from other areas) from a health perspective. Having a large amount of belly fat increases your risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Type 2 Diabetes and can increase your insulin resistance; all of which should be reason enough to make an attempt at fat loss.

We know that a calorie deficit is the only way to lose fat, but how can we target belly fat specifically? The truth is, we can't.

Unfortunately we cannot pinpoint where we lose fat from and an overall calorie deficit is what will ensure fat loss from our whole body, but are there is no way to choose where we lose this fat from. Specific core and ab exercises will never ensure fat loss from the belly; they will of course strengthen these muscles, but the muscles will never be visible unless the fat that is covering them is lost.

Every person has different genetics and therefore will lose fat from different areas first. This is why we are all different shapes and there is no way to change this - it's what makes us unique!
