A healthier lifestyle. Not healthier choices!

Most of us may be a member of a gym or might buy organic eggs the odd time. But the biggest issue that I find with most of my clients and most people looking to get fitter in general is that the effort put into developing a healthier habits is outweighed but the unhealthy lifestyle they continue to have and possibly don't even realise. The best way to make really long lasting results is to immerse yourself in a healthier lifestyle rather than taking on some healthier habits while remaining in an unhealthy lifestyle.

Let's take a random person as an example and look at the two scenarios :

Jane decides to give up alcohol and walk 10k steps a day. Two common healthy habits she has decided to take up. These are two great habits but when we look at an average day we can see how much of an impact that might have...

8am - Jane wakes up and has her usual breakfast (Cereal and Toast Possibly and a Latte)

8:30 - Jane goes on a 15 minute walk before work to get her steps up

9am - Jane sits down at her desk until Lunch time and probably has a few biscuits

1pm - The usual lunch (a meal deal possibly with a sugary drink)

1:30pm - A 20 minute walk to get her steps up.

2pm - Sitting at her desk again until 5:30pm. Snacks in the office and lower back pain from poor posture.

5:45pm - Jane has a Personal Trainer so spends an hour doing exercise (2 times per week).

7pm - Dinner is healthier but Jane has earned a desert because of how hard she worked in her session. Has no wine with her dinner.

8pm - 20 minute walk to get the last few steps in.

9pm - Jane watches TV and goes on her phone until she goes to bed.

So as we can see, the elements holding Jane back outweigh all the good she is doing... Now let's compare how this looks when Jane takes up a healthy lifestyle across the board.

7:30am - Jane wakes up early to go for a light jog for 30minutes

8am - Jane has her usual breakfast (Greek yoghurt, oats, fruit and some peanut butter and a black coffee)

8:30 - Jane goes on a Leaves for work early as she now walks/Cycles to work

9am - Jane sits down at her desk but mixes this up with regular stretching and sometimes uses a standing desk or squats.

1pm - The usual lunch (Prepared the night before, a chicken, mushroom and broccoli pasta with water)

1:30pm - A 20 minute walk to get her steps up.

2pm - Sitting at her desk again until 5:30pm. Brought her own snacks (Apple and a chocolate rice cake. In the office until 5:30 but still on the stretching and swapped the chair for a yoga ball.

5:45pm - Jane has a Personal Trainer so spends an hour doing exercise (2 times per week but also on a training program of her own for 2 other days).

7pm - Dinner is healthier but Jane has earned a desert because of how hard she worked in her session. Has no wine with her dinner.

8pm - 20 minute walk to get the last few steps in.

9pm - Jane Watches TV and preps the next days lunch then Reads a book or 'enjoys her evening' with her partner until she goes to bed.

In the second example. Jane still has a desert and the same job but clearly has a healthier lifestyle.

As a personal trainer I always try to emphasise that a 1 hour session in a week of 112 waking hours is not going to make a difference if it isn't supported by a healthier lifestyle.

So the next time you make the decision to take up some healthier habits. Don't! Take up a healthier lifestyle! Be like Jane 2.0!
